The Red Shoe Project

The Red Shoe Project (www.redshoeproject.org) is run by @theredrecruiter and aims to prove that helping non-profits can be both fun and beneficial. With a deserving cause and some creativity - @theredrecruiter, Michael Long, wears red shoes EVERY day - spreading awareness is much more achievable than in the past.

Red Shoe Project also recognizes that everyone has a different level of contribution that they are either willing or able to make…and that’s okay!  If you can't write a check, you can get involved by simply submitting a picture! Each year the Red Shoe Project identifies a worthy cause - this year they are supporting My New Red Shoes in San Francisco. This wonderful organization contributes to society by clothing underprivileged children for their first day of school. They give children a sense of pride… and we all know how important that is. For a period of one year from April 2009, the Red Shoe Project, will focus on raising awareness for My New Red Shoes.  The goal is to significantly increase the amount of exposure that this deserving organization receives.

Their approach is easy and FUN!! To participate, simply take the most creative picture you can in a pair of red shoes! The pictures appear in a photo stream on their site, with highlights tweeted by @theredrecruiter. I would love for you to do a story on @theredrecruiter and the Red Shoe Project.

Red Shoe Adventures!

I made it! I'm logged in ;-)

I'm going to upload the August 2009 Red Shoe Project video.  Here is the link for YouTube (just in case) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEI8D2eGtiM

The Red Shoe Project is simple on purpose.  A) I didn't want the effort to be centered around financial contributions AND B) I had pondered this idea of micro-participation for a while and thought this would be the perfect way to try it out.

Long story short... it's become a huge passion of mine.  I wear red shoes every single day in order to fulfill my half of the deal.  People around the U.S. and abroad have started submitting pictures to show their support.  Lots of fun!

The long-term hope is that we can make a large impact on one organization every year by spreading awareness for their cause through the use of social media and in-person interactions.  I'm pleased with our progress thus far and look forward to a red shoe wearing future!

Now to go find some more red shoes ;-)

Looking forward,

Michael

Red Shoes

What I love about this idea is the wonderful visual potential of the idea. Red is such a striking color and to see different people of different cultures and ages donning a pair of red shoes for a good cause must be very moving.  It turns a simple idea into a meme, a metaphor and a visual symbol for something far deeper.

Shoes n Not Twibbons

Have you noticed how charity movements are always symbolized by ribbons of different colours? Red ribbons, pink ribbons, yellow ribbons.  Red shoes are definitely a nice and funky change! :)

True! They make good visuals

True! They make good visuals for the project and for great tweetups. Who doesn't like an excuse to wear red shoes?! And Michael, the founder, wears them every day, which I think is pretty amazing.
